The Institute for Children in Crisis and Adversity in Africa (ICCA) is a Ugandan based and led not-profit nongovernmental organization established in 2023 to work towards ending all forms child adversity and crises in Uganda and potentially the rest of Africa by addressing multidimensional child poverty i.e., monetary (low-income) and non-monetary (deprivation) dimensions of poverty. It is estimated that 56% (12m million) children are living in households that are below the poverty line and experiencing deprivations.
The deprivations are manifested in poor child health and nutrition as evidenced by child neonatal mortality; infant mortality; under five mortality; malaria; HIV and AIDS among 0-14 years and chronic malnutrition especially within the first 1000 days. Other deprivations are in Early childhood Development (ECD) especially in the children under the age of three years; inadequate protection of children from Violence and Crime, abuse, neglect and exploitation especially the girl child and children with disabilities. Other forms of deprivation include food insecurity, lack of clean water and poor sanitation, inadequate birth registration (only 19% of under-fives have a birth certificate), shelter and household deprivations (41% live in households that cannot afford to replace broken pots and pans for cooking), child labour and information deprivation.
The effects of deprivation in childhood can be irreversible and the impact of child poverty can transcend generations. In addition, poverty is one of the root causes of violence and the exploitation, abuse and neglect of children, such as child labour, trafficking, sexual exploitation and child marriage.
